As we all know. A startup can be really challenging.
I see a lot of tips and advice passing by on how to make your startup succeed. But i'm always lacking the most important steps. I'm also seeing a lot of entrepreneurs missing those steps wich could help them be more successful in the long run.
Here are the 5 most important steps of making your startup succeed.
Crucial steps that can't be left out.
1. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.
For anything to succeed in life. You need to take care of yourself first. If it's a business, a friendship, a marriage, a partnership or anything else. YOU MUST COME FIRST EVERY TIME. This does not mean you have to be narcissistic. NO. Balance is the key to everything. Let me explain a little bit more...
YOUR HEALTH comes first at all times. A healthy mind in a healthy body is the key basic to succeed in any goal. When your mind, spirit and body are in a good shape you'll be much stronger to handle any challenge. The first and most important step is:
Your mind will be your powertool to achieve anything you want. Make sure that your thoughts are positive at all times. You attract what you think. So when you worry all the time or think in a negative way, you will attract more problems in your life. Your thoughts become your reality. So the first thing you must do is pay attention them. The way you speak to yourself when no one else is around is important. Stay positive, and don't be too hard on yourself. (We all know that we can be our own worst judge.)
Next thing is taking care of your body. Make sure that you eat healthy. We all know the quote: 'You are what you eat'. This is indeed true. If we eat junkfood or soda all the time our body will get more tired in the long run and will be less immune to illness. I'm not saying that you have to be a health guru and only eat superfoods and vegan. But at least try to eat and drink as healthy as possible.
Also make sure that you get enough sleep and that you take enough breaks. Exercise when you can. Even something small like a walk or taking the stairs can help. A common habit that I see with a lot of entrepreneurs is that success can be an addiction. But working 24/7 does not guarantee success. It's the opposite. When your body can't follow, it will crash sooner or later.. And when there is no YOU, there is NO BUSINESS. Some wise words: listen to your body!
No, i'm not talking about becoming a buddhist. I just want to make sure that you get enough 'me-time'. Sometimes taking a break and a step back is exactly what you need to see your business in another light and see things you would have missed otherwise. Try to relax when you can and enjoy the little things life has to offer. LET GO of anything that is hurting you or giving you distress. Make sure that there are no energy leaks. And if you think that something or someone is taking your energy.. find out what it is and try to fix it.
Starting a company means that you will need all your energy and all your strenght to deal with the good and bad days. Put yourself and your needs first and make sure you're healthy!
2. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE.
The next important step is your surrounding. Have you ever heard of the quote: 'Before you
diagnose yourself as depressed or low self esteem, first make sure that you are not surrounded by assholes.' Although this quote is harder than the way I would put it. It is correct. There are a lot of 'energy vampires' out there. And not everyone is as supportive as they should or could be.
I'm not saying that you have to judge your friends or family. But try and see where your energy goes and from what kind of people you get energy from. Carefully choose your surroundings with people who support your mission. Surround yourself with positive people because they will shape who you are. Surround yourself with different types of people who can give you different advice on the subjects you need. And last but not least:
Surround yourself with people who can teach you things! Find a mentor. Find friends or business relationships that know your potential and help you when you need them.
Stay away from toxic relationships at all cost. Because losing your energy is the most import thing you can lose when you're building your company. (Even more important than money)
FIND A HEALTHY BALANCE OF GIVING AND TAKING IN EVERY KIND OF RELATIONSHIP YOU HAVE.
3. GET FINANCIAL EDUCATION.
Another thing that I've heard so many times before from different startups or from entrepreneurs who have a lot of money: sponsorship!
Many startups need sponsors to achieve their goals. Or need a loan from the bank or have to invest the money they saved.
And of course.. you need money to achieve your goals. Money is a necessary thing to grow bigger and to survive. But before you ask someone to sponsor you, before you get a loan or invest your own money.. EDUCATE YOURSELF.
Know the difference between an asset and a liability. Know how to turn 5 dollars into 20 dollars. And please don't just spend it on the things you 'think' you need.
Schools don't teach us how to handle money. They train us how to be good employees. That's it. They never teach us how to invest our money. They don't teach us on how to save our money and when or how to spend money in a right way. When is it justified and when is it wasted. Make sure you know the difference between a healthy loan and a toxic loan.
There are plenty of inspiring people out there who can teach you this. Robert Kiyosaki is one
of the best examples I can give you. He explains the difference between his 2 fathers. Rich dad, poor dad. Which actually explains that the people who look rich, with fancy car, big house aren't exactly the 'healthy' rich you think they are.
They can make a lot of money, sure! But they can be as broke as anyone else by the end of the month. Make sure this doesn't happen for you! KNOW HOW TO HANDLE MONEY.
4. USE YOUR LEFT BRAIN OR FIND PEOPLE WHO CAN HELP YOU
The left business brain stands for every information or service you need to make sure you have a strong company. Business plan, financial plan, insurance, business development, sales, strategy, CRM, social media techniques, short & long term goal planning, SEO, SEA, SMO, administration, laws, accountants..
Know what your company needs and know how a company works. Again.. EDUCATE YOURSELF on those subjects and if you're a right brained entrepreneur like me.. make sure you surround yourself with people you can TRUST, who can help you in these matters.
These things are as crucial to succeed as the right brained treats.
5. USE YOUR RIGHT BRAIN OR FIND PEOPLE WHO CAN HELP YOU
The right brain stands for the creative intuitive side of entrepreneurship. Know your clients. Communication. Listen to your intuition. Graphic design & webdesign. Social engagement. Content marketing. Branding. Stand out. Adapt to change. Blog posts. Write & Feel.
Know your story. It's just not enough to start a business, know the numbers and know all the rules of the game, if you don't take your right brain with you. Make sure that you have a story to tell. That you have empathy towards your customers and that you can see the soul of your company in everything you write and design.
If you are left brained and this is your weakness... make sure you surround yourself with right brained people. They can help you out and visualize your ideas and soul.
BALANCE is the key to everything. Both sides have to work together in order to be successful.
